Is soil variation random?

چکیده

A typical geostatistical analysis of soil data proceeds on the assumption that the properties of interest are the outcomes of random processes. Is the assumption reasonable? Many factors have contributed to the soil as we see it, both in the parent material and during its formation. Each has a physical cause, each must obey the laws of physics, and each is in principle deterministic except at the sub-atomic level. The outcome must therefore be deterministic. Yet such is the complexity of the factors in combination, their variation over the time, and the incompleteness of our knowledge, that the outcome, the soil, appears to us as if it were random. Only when we see the results of man’s activities, such as the division of the land into fields, the imposition of irrigation, and ditches for drainage, do we recognize organized control. Clearly, the soil is not random, but except in the latter instances we are unlikely to go far wrong if we assume that it is. A second assumption underlying many geostatistical analyses is that of stationarity. We might ask if this holds. In the real world, we have ever only one realization of the random process in a particular region, and so the question has no answer. We can look to see whether regional averages are the same when we move from region to region. This means treating data from different regions as if they were different realizations of the same generating process. We should therefore change our question to ‘is a stationary model of the soil realistic?’ We can then examine the reality against the assumptions of our model. The soil is neither random nor stationary, but our models of it may be one or other or both. We should therefore ask whether our models are reasonable in the circumstances and whether they are profitable in leading to accurate predictions. q 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Behavior of Piled Raft Foundation on Heterogeneous Clay Deposits Using Random Field Theory

In the case of problematic soils and tall buildings where the design requirements cannot be satisfied merely by a raft foundation, it is of common practice to improve the raft performance by adding a number of piles so that the ultimate load capacity and settlement behavior can be enhanced. In this study, the effect of spatial variability of soil parameters on the bearing capacity of piled raft...

Mathematical Investigation of Soil Temperature Variation for Geothermal Applications

This paper aims to predict the periodic variation of ground temperature with depth for time variant condition of ambient air temperature and solar radiation data for Jamshedpur, India. Fourier series and numerical techniques have been used to determine (hottest and coldest day) diurnal and annual temperature variation of the year 2015. The diurnal temperature variation is up to 0.2 m depth of s...

Measurement and variation of site-specific hardpans for silty upland soils in the Southeastern United States

Soil compaction in the form of a hardpan layer restricts root growth and reduces crop yield throughout the Southeastern United States. However, the depth of this compacted soil layer varies significantly over landscapes. A sampling procedure was developed and evaluated to determine the depth of the hardpan layer in upland soils of Grenada silt loam soil type in this region. Cone index profiles ...

Modelling soil variation: past, present, and future

The soil mantles the land, except where there is bare rock or ice, and it varies more or less continuously. Many of its properties change continuously in time, too. We can measure the soil at only a finite number of places and times on small supports, and any statement concerning the soil at other places or times involves prediction. Variation in soil is also complex, so complex that no descrip...

The Effect of Spatial Variability and Anisotropy of Soils on Bearing Capacity of Shallow Foundations

Naturally occurred soil deposits inherit heterogeneity and anisotropy in their strength properties. The main purpose of this paper is to model the soil stratum with anisotropy consideration and spatially varying undrained shear strength by using random field theory coupled with finite difference numerical analysis to evaluate their effect on the bearing capacity of the shallow foundations. In t...
